RE: Help Us Feed Hungry Students at RSU 2
Everyone is at their best when they have enough to eat. Having enough food supports the foundation for optimal health and well-being throughout our lives. Nutritious food helps develop babies’ brains and bodies and gives kids the energy to excel in and out of school and reduce the risk of chronic diseases in adulthood.
Yet, in Maine over 83,000 children are eligible for free and reduced meals and often struggle to get the food they need. That is over 46% of kids statewide. In RSU 2, as a whole, 38% qualify for free and reduced price meals. We strive at RSU 2 to make sure every child who is eligible has access to our nutritious food programs every day.
To that end, RSU 2 has received a grant from Full Plates Full Potential to help every child access the nutritious food they need in school. Full Plates Full Potential has graciously granted RSU 2 $2900. Their grant gets us 80% of want we need and in order for us to reach 100% our community must raise $700.00.
School Nutrition plans to put a tote in every Elementary School classroom for all their students to utilize to receive breakfast after the bell and eat in their classrooms. If a student is late to school for various reasons, or still wants to participate in the early morning recess, or walking club, etc. they can go to their classroom, grab a tote, go to the cafeteria to get their breakfast and return to their classroom while not missing out on any work or morning meeting. We also plan to put new signage of why a nutritious healthy breakfast and lunch is so important in all cafeterias, including more up to date digital signs in the Middle and High School cafeterias.
