Hall-Dale High School has been selected as an Apple Distinguished School for the 2009-2010 school year. The notification from Apple’s Vice President for Education John Couch reads in part, “The Apple Distinguished School designation is reserved for schools that have become centers of educational excellence and leadership, consistently demonstrating “best practice” qualities of a 21st century learning environment utilizing Apple technology. This year, Hall-Dale High School will join 54 schools Apple is recognizing nationwide and one of four in the state of Maine.” It goes on to say, “In reviewing the great work that is underway at Hall-Dale High School, I was especially impressed by your success in using apple notebook computers to better prepare your students to compete in the 21st century workforce. Your school serves as an example for other schools both locally and nationally.”
Hall-Dale High School is extremely proud to receive this recognition from Apple. It reflects upon the leadership provided from both the RSU #2 and the former MSAD #16 Boards of Directors in supporting efforts to incorporate technology into the everyday lives of its students. It also reflects upon the visionary leadership provided by Superintendent of Schools Don Siviski. The Informational Technology Department headed by John Armentrout ensures that the hardware, software and infrastructure support are in place so that implementing innovative technology is seamless. Lydia Leimbach is instrumental in providing faculty with in class support with the integration of technology into a variety of classroom settings. The faculty is well known to be open to and accepting of the use of technology as a vital aspect of our students learning environment. Lastly and most importantly, Hall-Dale High School students embrace the use of technology and recognize the roll it will play in their future.
Girls Soccer Team Recognized
In December, the athletic department was notified that the Girls Varsity Soccer Team had been named the recipient of the John Osbourne Outstanding Sportsmanship Award for 2009. This award is voted on by the Central Maine Soccer Board of Officials, which encompasses approximately 30 high schools of all classes and genders. This is certainly a reflection upon these young women and their families. It is also a reflection upon the communities that support the school activities. As Athletic Director Tim Johnson often says, “High school sports don’t build character, they reveal it.” That is certainly the case here. The teams are coached by Guy Cousins and Roland St. Pierre. Congratulations to all connected with the program and thank you for bringing this honor to Hall-Dale.
Hall-Dale High School Opens New Fitness Room
Just recently, Hall-Dale High School opened its long awaited Fitness Center. Funded through the Simmons Fund, equipment has been purchased and installed specifically to support athletics and fitness at the high school level. Equipment includes 3 treadmills, 3 elliptical trainers, 4 stationary bikes, an abdominal/back machine, a pectoral deck, a leg extension, a leg curl and an assisted chin dip. Staff members have received training on the use of the equipment as well as in procedures to ensure longevity of the facility. Currently, high school athletic teams, physical education/wellness classes, students and staff are using the facility throughout the day as well as before and after school hours. When trained personnel are available to supervise, students are able to access the facility during scheduled study halls. Hall-Dale High School is extremely fortunate to have been able to accomplish this long anticipated facility and the staff and students are certainly grateful to have a real ‘dream come true’ state of the art facility. The Simmons Fund is in keeping with the will of the late Melvin H. Simmons and is to be used for educational purposes primarily in support of athletics at Hall-Dale High School.
On Going Events at Hall-Dale Middle School
Hall-Dale Middle School is in the midst of planning several annual events. The 6th grade conducts an environmental science program through the Chewonki Foundation in Wiscasset. A series of 4 days of field trips are scheduled and are designed to give our students hands on learning experiences under the direction of Chewonki staff that are recognized as leaders in the field of environmental education.
The 8th grade is preparing to attend the weeklong Leadership School at Camp Kieve in Nobleboro. The Leadership School is a truly unique experience for 8th graders as it uses group work, individual reflection and interactive, adventure based activities to address issues that young people face every day such as substance abuse, bullying and conflict resolution. Camp Kieve conducts a follow up activity day with students during the spring of their freshman year.
The Chewonki Foundation experience for 6th graders and the Camp Kieve experience for 8th grades happen in early May. The students and their families finance both of these events. When available, scholarship funds are used to support those in financial need.
In addition to these annual events, a number of new afterschool activities are being offered to students by the middle school faculty. Mrs. Paisley hosts an after school art club, giving students the opportunity to expand their experiences in the regular classroom. Some 8th grade students made masks for a contest held at the Hubbard Free Library. In the weeks to come, they will be experimenting with a variety of art mediums.
Middle school science teachers Mrs. Ladner and Ms. Ely have secured grant funds to take part in a Lego League in which students design and build projects using legos. This project gives students an experience in engineering concepts that cannot be addressed through our regular curriculum.
