Note from Public Relations

January 30, 2008

Dear Parents and Citizens:
Many of you are concerned as to how school consolidation will affect our community and our students.  The communities of Dresden, Farmington, Hallowell, Monmouth and Richmond agreed to comply with the school consolidation law and file a “Letter of Intent” (LOI) to the Department of Education’s (DOE) proposing a new school union consisting of the town above. The DOE Commissioner Susan Gendron approved the proposal in the LOI on August 31, 2007.  This approval allows us to move forward to formulate a new Regional School Unit (RSU) consisting of approximately 2500 students.

Our first task was to select members from each community to serve on a Regional Planning Committee (RPC) consisting of fifteen members.  Each community has a school committee member, a city or town official or their representative, and a community representative (community member).  The RPC’s job is to formulate a consolidation plan, approved by each local school board, and then submit it to the Department of Education.  Once the plan is approved by the DOE, it must be voted on by the citizens of each community.
