Good Evening. I want to let you know that I understand the concern for the children of our communities, and I appreciate the many offers to help. I also understand the anger many of you feel. Please know that the choice between implementing a program that would potentially expose hundreds of families and workers to the virus and looking for another way while children wait for meals was excruciating.
I have been constantly exploring other ways to get the food to our children, but I was reluctant to make any promises. Late this afternoon, I made a plan to have the RSU purchase the food from the food service program that would have been used in the site-based meals.
The best case scenario is that we give the food we purchase to a food pantry for each town who will use it for their backpack programs. Tomorrow, I will make contact with agencies who may be able to distribute the food in the safest way possible.
Based on the outpouring I have seen tonight, I'm sure we will find that solution.
