Good Evening KIDS RSU 2!
I hope this finds you enjoying the spring that has sprung since I last wrote-- the peepers and loons filling the night with their songs, the spring warblers flying in on the warm breezes, the Canada geese making their way to Maine. I have been watching a pair of owls raise their owlets in a tree hollow out back. It’s a gift to spend a few minutes each morning observing mama, whose only job is to keep her babies warm until they grow feathers.
After which I turn to my own jobs for the day. Today, one of my jobs was to provide you with a few announcements.
Employee Recognition: April and May feature school employee recognition days for school librarians (April 4), administrative assistants (April 22), school lunch heroes (May 1), principals (May 1), teachers (May 4-8), and school nurses (May 6). (I have had to update this twice since posting, so there may be even more!) Please join me this week in thanking them for their dedication to the KIDS of RSU 2!
End-of-Year Calendar Proposal: On Thursday, May 7, The RSU 2 Policy and Personnel Committee will make a recommendation to the Board of Directors for a revised end-of-year timeline as follows:
June 5—Last student day
June 8-15—Teacher workshop days
June 16 and 17—Moved to August 24 and 25 as workshop days
Most school districts in the state have revised their end-of-year calendars to allow for the work teachers and their administrators will need to do following the COVID-19 disruption to meet students' needs in the fall. Our proposed timeline matches that of many area districts and was arrived at after many discussions and input from teachers.
Graduation Ceremonies: If there is one thing we have not given up on during a time of great loss, it’s how to hold some kind of live graduation ceremony for our seniors in keeping with the Governor’s phased reopening guidelines. High school principals have been meeting with their senior classes and me to discuss possibilities amid ever-changing circumstances. We will keep you posted.
School Budget: In any given year there is a balance that must be struck between maintaining high quality educational programs for students and the contribution of towns in supporting that programming. This year, the balancing act is more challenging because the impact of the COVID-19 response has hit both taxpayers and schools very hard. Bearing this in mind, the RSU 2 leadership team is working diligently to develop a fiscally responsible and responsive budget that accounts for these difficult times. Timeline: As you may know, Governor Mills has moved the primary election in Maine to July 14, which will also be the date of our school budget validation referendum. This week, we will be working out the rest of the timeline for budget activity and hope to receive some guidance from the Governor's office on the public hearing process. We will keep you informed.
Superintendent’s Office Hours: Many or you have been participating in the zoom-based office hours, and we’ve had a few requests for town-based meetings. The principals and I think this is a great idea, and we are trying it out this week. The schedule is below. I also plan to make tech support a regular part of office hours by dedicating 5 or 10 minutes to questions about technology. Our Director of Information Technology, John Armentrout, will be on hand to respond and share information.
