The MA Express!

Greetings Mustangs!

I’d like to begin this week’s newsletter by thanking our freshmen and sophomores for participating in the NWEA testing this past week.  These tests (in reading and math) will give us some baseline data as we look for academic growth between now and when we test again in the spring.  We will mail home the results of these tests with the mid-semester progress reports (on/around November 10th).

I’d also like to give a huge SHOUT OUT to our Monmouth community for your support towards our student athletes.  Congratulations to the Football team for their victory over Oak Hill this past Saturday at Oak Hill.  Congratulations to our Cross Country team for their participation in the State Regionals this past Saturday at Twin Brook.  Despite the loss to Mt. Abram (boys soccer) and the loss to Hall-Dale (girls soccer) in the MVC Championship games this past Saturday evening, I witnessed two teams that played with heart, passion, drive and dedication.  Both teams understand the concept of teamwork and commitment, and I’m confident they will bring all they’ve got to the play-offs which kick-off this week.

Best of luck to our girls soccer team who will be hosting Waynflete in the quarterfinals on Tuesday (10/25) at 2:45pm; and to our boys soccer team who will be hosting Lisbon in the quarterfinals on Wednesday (10/26) at 2:45pm.

Early Release Reminder:  Our next early release day is set for Friday (10/28).  We will be running a modified schedule which will include a special school-wide assembly between 9:30 - 10:30.  Students will be dismissed at 11:20am. There will be no CATC on Friday.

MASG Mock Elections: This coming Tuesday (10/25) the State of Maine is hosting a Statewide Mock Election for all students. Voting for MA students will occur from 8am-2pm in the Library. Any student who is not able to vote during that time is asked to see Mr. Pascarella ASAP. Here is the official Mock Election Video and website for further information.

School-Wide Competition: Beginning on Monday (10/24) through Thursday (10/27), there will be a door decorating contest for the advisory groups. Each advisory group will decorate their door with Fall or Halloween decorations that they bring in. You may not get supplies from the Makerspace or Art room. Teachers can help students. The decorating must be finished by the end of school on Thursday the 27th and they will be judged that afternoon. The top four winners will be announced on Friday morning. These winners will get Winter Carnival points for their grade (1st will receive 100 points, 2nd will get 75, 3rd will get 50, and 4th will get 25). Good luck to all advisory groups!

Guidance Update: Cony/CATC is hosting a college/career fair and we would LOVE to bring a group of students to check it out.  Seats are available for this trip, but they are filling up. Preference goes to Juniors and Seniors, however if we don't have enough interest we will consider bringing Sophomores. This trip takes place on Friday, Nov. 18, 2022. Please email me directly if you are interested in attending and we will see if we have enough interest to put together a bus for this event!

Scholarships for Seniors: Mrs. Knolwton has added a few scholarships to the list, some of them are pretty big! Check out the document  attached and let her know if you have any questions!

2022-2023 Scholarship List

Student Government:  MASG will be hosting a Halloween Block Party on Friday 10/28 from 5-8pm. We will be putting on a haunted house on the lower level of the building and FBLA will be hosting a Trunk or Treat in the student parking lot. Any club is welcome to join in with their own Halloween activity.  Please see Ms. Menice or Mr. Pascarella if you are interested in participating.

Civil Rights Team:  Our Civil Rights is back up and running; picking up where they left off last school year!  Our team is part of the Maine Civil Rights Team Project (CRTP) whose mission is to increase the safety of elementary, middle, and high school students by reducing bias-motivated behaviors and harassment in our schools.  ALL students are invited and encouraged to be part of this team!  For more information, please connect with Ms. Darrell and/or Mr. Shain.

Special Presentation: The MA Civil Rights Team is proud to be hosting Kati Preston; a Holocaust survivor who will be doing a school-wide assembly for MA on Friday (10/28) beginning at 9:30am.

Say NO to Bullying!  Bullying is NEVER OK, and has NO place at MA.  If you or someone you know is experiencing any type of bullying or harassment (directly or indirectly), please let a teacher, staff member, or administrator know immediately.  We take great pride in maintaining a school environment in which ALL students and staff can feel safe and secure.  As it’s been said before, “If you ignore it, you approve it.”  Please join me in making our school a bully-free zone.  Thank you!

Anti-Bullying Quote of the Week:  “Stand up for what is right, even if you’re standing alone.”

Use of the Gym/Weight Room:  Students are reminded that you are only allowed to use the gym/weight room IF there is an authorized staff member serving as the gym/weight room supervisor.  For MA, Mr. Morrill is that person and he will be posting hours that the gym will be opened to students.  Due to safety and liability reasons, we can not have students using the gym/weight room facilities without this supervision.  In advance, I thank you for your cooperation.

Yearbook: Senior Pictures are due to Dr. Ross by Halloween.

That concludes this week’s edition of The MA Express!  Take care and stay well.

 Respectfully,

Mr. Ted Finn, Principal
