The MA Express!

Greetings Mustangs!

I’d like to begin this week’s newsletter by thanking our incredible student body for demonstrating the utmost respect and attentiveness towards our guest speaker this past Friday.  Kathy Preston, who is an author, motivational speaker, and a Holocaust survivor came to Monmouth Academy to share her story with us.  A very special thank you to our Civil Rights Team, led by Ms. Darrell and Mr. Shain, for organizing this incredible opportunity for our students and staff.

The Halloween Block Party, hosted by the MA Student Government, our FBLA, and our NHS this past Friday evening (10/28) was a HUGE success!  Some of the feedback we received included:  “It was amazing” and “the best Halloween Block Party ever!”  MA students spent hours creating this experience, which included their own Mad Scientist’s Classroom. Haunted music piped through the entire school while large groups of visitors were guided through the experience! The Spooky Pancake Supper, new this year, is something we will definitely do again! Bat Poop (chocolate chip) and BooBerry were the favorites! Hot Cocoa and cider was served up until the final call.

We had our largest turnout of trunkers for our Trunk or Treat this year including some friends from Sesame Street; a real Queen (Ms Maine); Roz collecting paperwork;  an entire witch’s workshop; 2 Pigs in a Blanket; a Fortune Teller; Pirates making kids walk the plank for their candy;  Dorothy, Scarecrow, Glenda & an actual yellow brick road; real horses and that’s only about  half of the participants!  Best of all was the strong community feeling that was present. Smiling parents, adorable costumed children and proud Monmouth Academy advisors & students!  Thank you all who participated; we look forward to bringing this event back again next year!

Athletics

Our girls soccer team season came to an end last week with a loss to Waynflete in the quarterfinals.  Overall, our girls soccer concluded their season with an 11 - 4 record; a trip to the MVC Championship Game; and All-MVC honors which were awarded to: 1st team - Kerstin Paradis; and 2nd team - Kaitlyn Frost and June Foyt.

Our  boys soccer team ended their regular season with an 11-3-1 record and played in the MVC Championship game.  They defeated Lisbon after two overtimes and 5 penalty kicks by a score of 3 - 2 and moved on to the semifinals against Mt. Abram. Although they lost to Mt. Abram, they had a great season overall. Those arning All-MVC Honors were: 1st Team: Patrick Strout, Matt Marquis, Hunter Frost (who also set a school shutout record this season).  2nd team: Ryan Michaud.  Coach Fletcher also earned Coach of the Year Honors.

Our Cross Country team had three runners compete in the State Championship this past Saturday at Twin Brook in Cumberland.  Congratulations to Holly Hunt, Allyson Lewis, and Brosnan Comeau.  Your commitment and dedication to Cross Country did not go unnoticed!

I want to thank all of our fall student athletes and their coaches for representing themselves; their teams; our school; and the Monmouth community with great pride and class!  A special thanks to our incredible Sport Boosters and our transportation/facility departments for their continued support of all of our programs!  You can’t hide that Mustang Pride!

Fall Sports Recognition Night:  As of this communication, we are looking at having our Fall Sports Recognition Night next Wednesday evening (11/09) beginning at 6:00pm in the Gym.  The time is subject to change, so please check your email again by the end of this week.

Winter Sports:  Mr. Bell sent out a survey (by grade level) to all students to gather information about the upcoming Winter Sports season.  Any student interested in playing a winter sport is asked to complete that brief survey ASAP.

Grades:  Just a reminder that grades will close on Friday (11/04) for the mid-semester progress reports.  Teachers will have until Tuesday (11/08) to get their grades in; and the progress reports will be mailed out between 11/10 - 11/15.

Infinite Campus:  The Parent Portal for IC was opened as of last Wednesday (10/26).  All parents should have received an informational email with a tutorial video and username/password to access your IC account.  If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Guidance Update: Cony/CATC is hosting a college/career fair and we would LOVE to bring a group of students to check it out.  Seats are available for this trip, but they are filling up. Preference goes to Juniors and Seniors, however if we don't have enough interest we will consider bringing Sophomores. This trip takes place on Friday, Nov. 18, 2022. Please email me directly if you are interested in attending and we will see if we have enough interest to put together a bus for this event!

Scholarships for Seniors: Mrs. Knolwton has added a few scholarships to the list, some of them are pretty big! Check out the document  attached and let her know if you have any questions!

2022-2023 Scholarship List

Attention Juniors: Monmouth Academy will be hosting SAT testing on Wednesday, April 12th.  There will be a fee to take the test, and we are still looking into how much.  Juniors were asked to let the Guidance Office know by last Friday (10/28), but due to the assembly and early release, we have extended the deadline to MONDAY - 10/31.  We need to place our testing order in advance, so even if you think that you may be interested, please let Guidance know by Monday (10/31).

Civil Rights Team:  Our Civil Rights is back up and running; picking up where they left off last school year!  Our team is part of the Maine Civil Rights Team Project (CRTP) whose mission is to increase the safety of elementary, middle, and high school students by reducing bias-motivated behaviors and harassment in our schools.  ALL students are invited and encouraged to be part of this team!  For more information, please connect with Ms. Darrell and/or Mr. Shain.

Say NO to Bullying!  Bullying is NEVER OK, and has NO place at MA.  If you or someone you know is experiencing any type of bullying or harassment (directly or indirectly), please let a teacher, staff member, or administrator know immediately.  We take great pride in maintaining a school environment in which ALL students and staff can feel safe and secure.  As it’s been said before, “If you ignore it, you approve it.”  Please join me in making our school a bully-free zone.  Thank you!

Anti-Bullying Quote of the Week:  “Knowing what’s right doesn’t mean much unless you do what’s right.”   -Franklin Roosevelt

Use of the Gym/Weight Room:  Students are reminded that you are only allowed to use the gym/weight room IF there is an authorized staff member serving as the gym/weight room supervisor.  For MA, Mr. Morrill is that person and he will be posting hours that the gym will be opened to students.  Due to safety and liability reasons, we can not have students using the gym/weight room facilities without this supervision.  In advance, I thank you for your cooperation.

Yearbook: Senior Pictures are due to Dr. Ross by Halloween (10/31).

That concludes this week’s edition of The MA Express!  Take care and stay well.

Respectfully,

Mr. Ted Finn, Principal
