The Alps and the Mediterranean Trip Opportunity.
Hello Parents,
Hopefully by now you’ve received word that your student has been invited to participate in our school’s trip to Europe—The Alps and the Mediterranean—which includes Switzerland, Italy, France and Spain. We would love for your student to have the opportunity to experience this once in a lifetime adventure.
We are hosting an information and enrollment meeting for this program on Thursday, September 26th at 6:30pm in Room 210 to answer all of your questions.
If you are able to attend or can’t make it and would like more information, please RSVP here (https://rsvp.eftours.com/cj5hvpf) by September 24th.
One parent must be in attendance. You can reserve a spot on the tour at the meeting with a $95 deposit—if you make the decision to travel. Otherwise, we will need to know if you plan to join the trip by October 18.

32nd MOBY (My Own Back Yard) - Memories that will last a Lifetime!
This past Friday, our learners and team of dedicated staff members returned from My Own Back Yard (MOBY). This year marked the 32nd year of MOBY; and, from all accounts an incredible week of learning, teamwork, and enjoyment for members of the Class of 2023!
Once again this year, our learners spent the week at Acadia National Park where they engaged in learning English, math, science, social studies, art, and physical education in this unique applied learning program.
A tremendous thank you to our dedicated staff who spent the week away from their own families to provide this opportunity to our learners: Mr. Schultz (Program Leader), Ms. Small, Mr. Warren, Mrs. Damon-Theriault, Mr. Anderson, Mr. Dube, Mrs. Bauer, Mr. Westberry, and Dr. Nikki Westberry. Without these staff members incredible service, we would not be able to provide this wonderful opportunity.
Today our students and staff provided lots of wonderful service to our community that supports us in so many ways during our 13th Annual MA/United Way Day of Caring. They stacked wood, cleaned barns, and completed outdoor work for senior citizens; dissembled and put docks in storage for the State YMCA Camp; painted and completed outdoor projects at Camp Mechuwanna and Camp Androscoggin; cleared trails for the Cochnewagan Trail Blazers and Whittier Woods; visited with and played games with residents at Heritage Manor; removed and hauled trees on 1 Big Sustainable Island; gardened at the East Monmouth Methodist Church; cloned and prepped the HLC greenhouse;helped The Monmouth Museum get ready for Applefest; and more! Thank you for letting us assist you!
MOBY Update from Jenora Howard Schultz:
MOBY update 2019, day 4- First, I checked and they have not frozen! Breakfast was Pancakes and lots of syrup 😉 Then a busy day began.... first the Students did their half day of community service in the park. This earns them a free night of camping. They cleaned and did brush removal around the coping stones of the carriage trails. This is a group that knows how to work hard! Then they headed to Sand beach for both a poetry lesson and an art lesson on Scientific Illustration. The group also did the zgreat Head home- amazing weather by the way, and did a Shatter Zone geology talk. Dinner was a picnic on the top of Cadillac Mountain. The group ate grilled chicken wraps, fresh veggies and chips. Thank you to all the parents who sent in dessert- they are greatly appreciated especially tonight at sunset on the top of the mountain.
At 7:30 they were just settling in for Mr. Warren’s Astronomy lesson. The sky is dark and clear and tons of constellations are visible...from what I’m told it’s breathtaking tonight...many thanks to all the teachers who volunteer for this week, and those who stay back and make everything run smoothly in their absence. ✨
MOBY Update from Jenora Howard Schultz:
MOBY update 2019 day 3- cool temps at night but beautiful during the day...French Toast And bacon for breakfast. Then the Ships Harbor walk with a history lesson and an Art lesson and watercolor painting at the water’s edge. The group then hiked Flying Mountain and spent some time writing. The group ate lunch then went to Echo Lake to swim ( yes lots really went swimming!) and then headed up to hike Beach Mountain and explored Canada Cliffs. Dinner was pasta and meatballs and garlic bread. The much anticipated Ghost story around the campfire was next then everyone headed to bed...except Mr. Schultz.

MOBY update 2019 Day 2: Last night went well despite the mosquitoes chasing Mr. Schultz out of his hammock and into a tent at 3 am. 🙂
Breakfast bright and early was Eggs, Bacon and Home Fries. The group had a "fantastic" tide pooling experience at Wonderland, collecting and observing Sea Urchins, Sponges, Limpets, Rock Crabs and Sea Urchins. The next stop was the Glacial Erratic talk on top of South Bubble. Lunch was at the base of Gorham Mountain, and then a hike up to first the Sea Cave with a history and geology lesson. The hike continued to the top of the Mountain where the sun came out and the group spent lots of time enjoying a Wellness talk, History lessons and a Food Web discussion.
Dinner tonight was Corn on the Cob compliments of Greg Koller and Highmoor Farm (THANKS!) , and pulled pork sandwiches. The class got to take in an impromptu Ranger presentation on Art and Photography as related to National Parks tonight. Now they are all tucked into their tents...hopefully sleeping soon....
When you pop into Mr. Snedeker’s US Studies class and discover them discussing lobbyists, and you know Representative Kent Ackley is at MA, you find him and put him on the spot! Thank you, Representative Ackley (and ‘85 MA alumnus), for your impromptu “Q & A” with our students.

“MOBY update 2019 Day 1- What a great start to this year's trip! It is the 32nd year of MOBY and Monmouth is still blessed with staff willing to take 48 high school kids camping on the ocean for a whole week. The day started at Maine Maritime College. The class toured the ship The State of Maine, and got to experience raising and lowering the sails of the Schooner Bowdoin. There was a history lesson, a great lunch in the college cafeteria, and a visit to the Planetarium. Perhaps a highlight for many students was time spent in the ship's Bridge simulator. The kids to got try their hands at navigating "ships" through New York Harbor. There was only one MA alumni sighting this year as Joseph Manduca was there getting his tugboat certification. Onward to Acadia- the group got set up in record time, perhaps due to diligent practice ahead of time Dinner tonight was Hot Dogs, Hamburgers and Baked Beans. As I was chatting with Shawn tonight Mrs. Damon Theriault was regaling the students with her famous campfire story. The kids are now headed to bed and will be up early for a busy day tomorrow.”
This past Friday, learners in Ms. Littlefield's Literature III class participated in a #MAkerSpace challenge that utilized their knowledge of the play, A Raisin in the Sun, and materials from #MAkerspace: On a Cart. Mrs. Bellegarde, MA librarian, pulled together a variety of random items - everything from popsicle sticks to empty industrial spools - and asked learners to create a 3D model set from the play using only the description provided in the director's notes. After making a rough sketch, learners worked in collaborative teams of two. Mrs. Bellegarde brought the materials to the classroom with #MAkerspace: On a Cart, challenging learners to work with limitations in their design and construction. It was an excellent learning experience for all learners as well a memorable way for them to apply their knowledge.
The Class of 2023, along with an “above and beyond” MA staff, officially embarked on their MOBY (My Own Back Yard) journey this morning. They are the 32nd class to experience this awesome applied learning trip!

Varsity Cross Country this Friday will be at Telstar HS in Bethel, not at Leavitt HS.
The bus will depart at 1:15 p.m.
It will soon be FAFSA season! (October 1, 2019) Prior to completing the FAFSA, a parent/guardian and senior student must create an FSA ID. You can do this at any time, and we have attached a handy handout from FAME (Finance Authority of Maine) to help out with this. https://5il.co/a3vd

Once again our students will be assisting their community during our 13 Annual Day of Caring on Friday, September 20 from 8-11 a.m.
Do you know of a person or organization in the Monmouth/Winthrop area that could benefit from our students' service? If so, please contact Pat Goff at 933-4416 or pgoff@kidsrsu.org by THIS Friday, 9/13. In past years our students have assisted organizations and senior citizens stack firewood, trim and haul brush, wash windows, paint exterior walls, and much more.
